Fota seeking your help with project on ladybirds

Fota Wildlife Park is calling on the people of Cork for their help to record hibernating ladybirds.

The Wildlife Park together with the University College Cork (UCC) School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences is managing a citizen science research project on the status, threats to and protection of ladybirds in Ireland.

The project, funded by both Fota and the Irish Research Council, is asking the public to get involved by sending their ladybird photographs and information to [email protected]

An important part of this project involves the study of hibernating ladybirds which typically happens at this time of year.

Fota Wildlife Park is asking the public, whether at home, in their gardens or out and about, to help by photographing and documenting any ladybirds they find.

This is an important project on a critical species and the knowledge gained from this project will contribute to the national understanding of ladybirds, according to research scholar Gill Weyman.

“Areas to look for ladybirds hibernating include in trees, fences, sheds or around window sills in buildings.”

Fota is asking that when you see a ladybird to leave where it where you found it but take a photo.

Make a note of where it is, the date and time, a description of the location and email the information to [email protected]

If you are unsure about anything, help is at hand on www.biology.ie where there are identification guides or email [email protected] for further information.
