'Everyone knows the difficulties carrying knives cause in Cork city'

“Everyone knows the difficulties that carrying knives cause in Cork city,” a district judge declared as he sentenced a young man to six months for carrying three screwdrivers.

Judge Olann Kelleher imposed that sentence on the young man at Cork District Court.

Detective Garda Mick Dolan said three screwdrivers were seized from a man acting suspiciously in a housing area in Cork city on Tuesday night, June 2.

Detective Garda Dolan arrested Michael O’Driscoll of no fixed address and previously of Courtown Drive, Knocknaheeny, Cork.

Det. Garda Dolan testified that on June 2 an anonymous caller reported a man wearing a red jacket acting suspiciously on Lee Road, Cork.

They arrived on the scene and located the defendant on a laneway behind houses on Lee Road.

He had three screwdrivers found in his possession, Detective Garda Dolan said.

O’Driscoll was charged with possession of the screwdrivers with intention to use them in connection with the commission of a burglary.

He was further charged in connection with the same three screwdrivers with possession of these implements as an offence under the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.

Det. Garda Dolan said that a surgical needle was found in the defendant’s pants pocket.

Judge Kelleher asked the young man during an initial bail application how recently he had taken heroin, and O’Driscoll said he had done so three days earlier.

Judge Kelleher said he was concerned about the poor state of the defendant’s health from his appearance in court and he directed that he would be given whatever medical attention he required while remanded in custody.

Diarmuid Kelleher, defence, said of the defendant on the night, “He was homeless. He was trying to get into a derelict building to sleep. He had nowhere to go.”
