Esker bringing Tchaikovsky and Mahler to Cork

The Esker Festival Orchestra embarks on its fourth annual festival and national tour this week coming to Cork on Saturday.

The orchestra brings together 65 Irish and international emerging young professional musicians and is conducted by Peter Joyce of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

Peter is a graduate of Trinity College where he began composing, arranging and conducting, later studying conducting with Dr. Geoffrey Spratt at the CIT Cork School of Music. 

The Esker's 2017 programme consists of Gustav Mahler's 'Songs of a Wayfarer' with Mezzo-soprano Carolyn Holt (Royal Academy of Music), a world premiere of new work ‘Iridescence’ by young Irish composer Christopher Moriarty and Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony 'Pathetique'. 

Christopher recently graduated from the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. He was awarded 1st Place in the Irish Freemasons Young Musician of the Year Competition. 

Irish mezzo Carolyn Holt is a graduate of the Royal Irish Academy of Music and is continuing her studies at the Royal Academy of Music where she is the recipient of the Isabel May Walton and Cork Scholarships. 

Before their national tour, Esker Festival Orchestra performs an additional Evening of Chamber Music in association with the Black Gate Cultural Centre, Galway City on Thursday.

Their performance in Cork takes place in the CIT School of Music at 8pm on Saturday.
