Early tallies in Cork constituencies show a clear majority voting Yes

Within minutes of boxes being opened in Ballincollig it became clear that Cork’s three constituencies outside the city were following the national trend and voting strongly in favour of repealing the Eighth amendment.

The first tallies for Cork East, based on roughly 15% of boxes, showed 64% of the electorate voting yes. Cork South West went 1% further, showing 65% voting yes based on tallies of 30% of boxes.

Kinsale native Tara Flynn has been one of the most high-profile campaigners for a yes vote and her hometown backed her strongly, with box tallies suggesting more than three-quarters of voters supported repeal.

Cork North West also backed repeal, albeit with a smaller margin. A tally of almost 50% of boxes showed 57% voting yes, with 43% voting no. Kilshannig in north Cork appeared to buck the national trend, with the initial tally suggesting a majority voting no, by a margin of a single vote.
