Douglas hit by spot flooding during heavy rainfall; M8 motorway also closed by downpours

Douglas was hit by flash floods during heavy rainfall on Monday, leaving roads in the village under water.

Just weeks after a devastating fire closed Douglas Village Shopping Centre, causing jobs losses and damaging the local economy, floods arrived last night during torrential rainfall.

Businesses appeared to escape any major damage but assessments will be carried out this morning to discover the full extent of the flooding.

Emergency workers closed some roads in the village at around 10pm but the waters quickly receded soon afterwards and it was hoped the flooding passed without major incident.

Elsewhere, a section of the Old Youghal Road was closed in the city near Lotamore due to flooding.

Monday's downpours caused traffic congestion on road networks all across the city and county.

Just north of the Cork county border, the M8 motorway flooded, causing severe issues for motorists.

Both northbound lanes were closed by gardaí between J12 Mitchelstown North and J11 Cahir South due to severe flooding on the route.

Gardaí were at the scene and were directing traffic but there were huge tailbacks in the area.

Flooding was also reported on the N25 at Junction 4 Carrigtwohill affecting both sides of the road.

AA Roadwatch warned motorists to increase their breaking distances because of the surface water.

"Only drive through surface water if you know it's not too deep for your vehicle," a statement from the AA warned.

In west Cork, a number of roads became impassable due to the deluge.

A river overflowed onto the road and a bridge on the Beara peninsula.

In the city, a number of other roads experienced spot flooding, including Monahan Road where large pools of water gathered from early afternoon.
