Douglas Street traders issue a ban on election posters

Traders and businesses on Douglas Street have issued a ban on election posters saying they interfere in a negative way with the streetscape.

The Douglas Business Association said that effective immediately, they are asking that posters of any kind - election, political or other are not erected on any pole or railings on the street.

"We are currently focussed on making our street a "Green Street" and where possible, we are aiming to eliminate single-use products including cable ties and posters as well as coffee cups, bottles, straws etc.," the Douglas Street Business Association said in a statement.

"We respectfully ask that these no longer be attached to poles and railings along the length of the street, effective from February 2019."

A number of towns in Cork have issued similar bans on election posters. While such bans are not legally enforceable, community organisations have asked candidates for their cooperation to ensure posters are not erected in their localities.
