Directions are expected from the DPP in murder probe of Aidan O’Driscoll

A DIRECTION is expected in the coming weeks on whether charges will be brought against any of the six people arrested as part of the Aidan O’Driscoll murder investigation.

The 37-year-old father-of-two was gunned down in Blackpool on December 7, 2016, seconds after getting out of a vehicle in Blackpool.

He was on his way to a painting and decorating job in a nearby house when he was shot just before 5pm on the Old Commons Road.

Six people were arrested in the months after the murder and files were sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions last October. The investigation team had hoped for a response from the DPP’s office by now, but are expecting a decision within weeks.

The arrests were made in the city and in Blarney in the wake of the killing.

An inquest into his death heard that he had died of multiple gunshot wounds after being shot four times.

The gunmen abandoned and set fire to a white Vauxhall Astra van in Killeens after the killing, before fleeing in a waiting red Opel Astra.

The Astra was later found burnt out in a ravine in an isolated area between Nadd and Rylane. Gardaí believe local knowledge was needed by the gang to organise dumping the car there. Another car used in the murder, a silver Nissan Almera, was in the general Blackpool area for a number of hours prior to the killing. That car was found burnt out at Redemption Road.
