Cycle lanes have become car parks in these city areas

PARKING issues around Alfred Street, Railway Street and the Lower Glanmire Road need to be addressed to help local businesses, it has been warned.

Green Party representative Oliver Moran has asked City Hall to consider revised parking arrangements including 30-minute parking, the reintroduction of loading bays and the physical segregation of cycle lanes in the area.

He said there is a lack of short-term parking, following a redesign of the road layout five years ago and cycle lanes are now being parked in illegally.

“The businesses there are very frustrated with the parking situation too and they have their particular customers who need to be close with people needing to pick up tiles and building goods and not having to park for a very long time. They are feeling the pressure from people that are coming for longer times also, who are now shopping elsewhere,” said Mr Moran.

City Hall director of operations Valerie O’Sullivan said rapid development in the area means the current infrastructure will have to be reviewed.

“The areas comprising of Alfred Street, Railway St and Lower Glanmire Road were re-designed as part of the Kent Station to City Centre Scheme in 2014. At that time the re-design and layout of these streets was subject to public consultation through a Section 38 planning process and ultimately agreed by the members of Cork City Council.

“The area now includes a bus gate, cycle lanes, improved public realm & parking spaces general parking, disabled parking, loading bays etc.

“Given the changing nature of this area having regard to the recent planning permissions and significant developments under construction, the Infrastructure Development Directorate has confirmed that the layout will be subject to review,” Ms O’Sullivan added.

The area is in close proximity to the redeveloped Kent Station and planned large scale residential and office developments at Horgan’s Quay Building work could start early next year on the apartment scheme facing Horgan’s Quay and Railway Street, which will be delivered as part of the HQ Horgan’s Quay joint-venture project involving BAM and Clarendon Properties, which includes a 136-bed hotel and some 400,000 square feet of office space.

Work on what will become The Dean Hotel Cork, overlooking the city’s train station, and the office element, overlooking the River Lee, is well advanced.
