Covid-19 case reported from Cork after 11 days with no new cases

A single additional case of Covid-19 has been reported from Cork after an eleven-day period when no new cases of the disease were reported here.

Latest figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) show that 1,536 cases of Covid-19 were reported from Cork up to Saturday, up from 1,535 the previous day.

The number of cases of Covid-19 had not increased in Cork between June 15th and 26th.

Last night, three people in Cork with Covid-19 were receiving intensive, 24-hour hospital care at critical care units across the Mercy University Hospital and Cork University Hospital.

Just two critical care beds were vacant at CUH with eight beds vacant at the Bon Secours hospital.

Nationally, 25,462 cases of Covid-19 have now been reported since the beginning of the outbreak, and 1,735 people with Covid-19 have died.

Last night, Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health, expressed concern about increases in the number of cases of Covid-19 being reported, and some new clusters.

“As restrictions are lifted and people move about more, it’s important that we use the tools that have helped us suppress the virus to date.

“Hand washing, physical distancing, cough/sneeze hygiene and wearing face coverings are important personal behaviours that mean, as we go about our daily lives, that we are doing everything we can to avoid contracting the virus and spreading it to those we love,” he said.
