Council urged to make use of vacant Lakelands Tavern site

CITY Hall has been urged to take charge of a vacant building in Mahon.

The Lakelands Tavern site, on Avenue De Rennes, has long been identified as a key development for the area.

The Mahon Local Area Plan, drawn up by the last term of council, contained a number of objectives for the Avenue De Rennes area, including seeking the redevelopment of vacant and under-utilised sites to create an attractive high street.

The site is listed on Cork City Council’s derelict sites, with a market value of €600,000.

Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer said the site needs to be maintained for future development.

He added that it could be a potential location for a long-awaited library in Mahon.

“This site has been vacant for far too long, and, in the present climate, should be taken in-charge and developed to provide social housing or new, mixed-unit development.

“The lack of development of this site is a continuing blight on the area.

“The failure to maintain the building and surrounding land, such as the car park, where large potholes are developing, is unacceptable,” said the Senator.

“Cork City Council needs to address this issue by instructing the owners to maintain the surrounding car-park, as a matter of priority, in the interest of the local community and local businesses.

“This site could be transformative for Avenue de Rennes, and Mahon as a whole, by developing a mixed commercial and residential area, incorporating a square and linking in with the Blackrock walk and cycleway.”
