Coronavirus latest: Two staff members at Bons self-isolating; CUH patient transferred to Dublin

TWO members of staff at the Bon Secours hospital in Cork are self-isolating following confirmation of a Covid-19 case in an elderly patient.

The man being treated for coronavirus at the private hospital was admitted for treatment of suspected pneumonia.

He is now in an intensive care unit, in a single bed room.

The diagnosis at the Bons is another case of 'community transmission', meaning the virus is spreading from person to person within Ireland.

There are now 21 cases of coronavirus in the Republic of Ireland and 12 in Northern Ireland.

In a statement, Bon Secours hospital management said: "The patient is being cared for in a single room and contact precautions have been in place since the patient’s arrival. To protect patient privacy, we will make no further comment on the case.

"Coronavirus response teams have been in place at the Bon Secours health system for some time, with working groups at each facility and at group level."

Cork University Hospital has approximately 100 staff self-isolating, but HSE chief executive Paul Reid has said some will be returning to work.

A patient who was diagnosed with Covid-19 last week has since been transferred to Dublin for further treatment. It's understood he is seriously ill.

CUH this morning re-stated that it will be reducing/rescheduling outpatient appointments from today until Wednesday.

However, the following services will not be affected and patients should attend for appointments: dialysis, dressing clinic, warfarin clinic, endoscopy, Cystic Fibrosis, infusions, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

The latest advice from the World Health Organisation says 80% of cases of Covid-19 are a mild to moderate illness, close to 14% have severe disease and around 6% are critical.

Covid-19 has an estimated global mortality rate of 3.4%.

Italy's death toll shot up by 133 to 366 while up to 16 million people have been quarantined until April 3.
