Coronavirus latest: CIT prepares for possible campus closure

CIT has told its staff to bring their laptops home this weekend amid concerns over the current coronavirus outbreak. It has also cancelled all travel to areas affected by the outbreak.

In an advisory issued to staff this afternoon, management said they are continuing to monitor and review their risk assessments and adopt advice provided by the HSE for the education sector.

“Our Emergency Management Team is monitoring the situation as it evolves both locally and nationally. We are engaged in contingency planning, particularly in the event of a campus closure to ensure that critical services are maintained. We are reviewing significant planned events and advising on a case by case basis,” the advisory said.

“A suggestion we have received is that where staff have laptops they should consider bringing them home for the weekend and ensure that their data is on an accessible drive,” it added.

Members of the CIT community are being actively encouraged to exercise caution in terms of their own health and the health of the entire community, with staff and students being reminded that effective handwashing and cough etiquette are key elements of infection control. “Our Estates team are working to ensure that adequate handwashing facilities are available and we will fast track any issues reported,” it said.

It said that should there be any change to the situation this weekend, they will advise staff by email and students by email/text.
