Cork’s new Maldron to open on South Mall before Christmas

WITH 14 weeks to go before it opens its doors, more than 100 construction workers are onsite getting the new Maldron Hotel South Mall ready for its first guests.

The hotel will have entrances on both Parnell Place and the Mall and listed features of the previous buildings on the site are being lovingly incorporated into the new hotel.

On the Parnell Place side, months have been spent restoring an original fanlight window while on the South Mall side customers will be able to people watch in a café with the facade of the former fire office and the building next door.

Bad weather earlier in the year hampered work at times but general manager Robert McCarthy is confident that they will be opening their doors before Christmas.

“Because we are opening in mid-December we will miss some of that pre-Christmas rush,” he said.

“But of course we will be open for New Year’s and hope to be full for that.”

While the construction company get the building ready, Mr McCarthy is busy assembling his staff to operate the hotel.

“We have a huge amount of work going on regards recruitment, putting the team together,” he said.

“We have been meeting some fantastic people.

“We have made a quite a lot of appointments in the last few weeks and have more high-profile appointments to be made in the next week to two weeks. At that stage, most of the structure for the senior management team will be in place.”

The Maldron Hotel South Mall will be the fourth hotel in the city owned by the Dalata Group so some staff may come from their sister hotels. Interest in being involved in a new hotel from the start is also fueling the recruitment drive.

“Dalata’s big focus is on developing people,” Sales & Marketing Manager Donna Mannion said.

“People know about that, and can see room to progress. I came from the Clayton Cork City, so people can see there are opportunities.”

By the time the building is fully staffed, there will be approximately 120 people employed in the hotel. This will include staff for the high-end Italian restaurant being built on the Parnell Place side of the building, which will open later than the hotel, in March or April 2019.

Bookings are brisk already and they expect it to get busier in the coming weeks as customers’ thoughts turn to Christmas and New Year plans.

Mr McCarthy believes the hotel is opening at an ideal time, with Cork City crying out for additional hotel beds.

“It has been a bumper year for tourism and we have certainly see it here with our sister properties and fellow hoteliers, which is fantastic,” he said.

“We would be aware of a lot of dates when there wasn’t a bed to be had in the city.”

The new hotel will add 163 rooms of additional availability, up to 400 people in-house on a full night, and management say other businesses in the city will benefit as a result of that.

“There is a big spin-off - to shops, restaurants and other attractions - when there are more people coming into hotels,” Mr McCarthy said.
