Cork's best buildings are named at the annual Better Building Awards

The refurbishment of St Patrick's Bridge received the Judges' Award at this year's Cork Better Building Awards.

Organised by the Cork Business Association the annnual awards congratulate staff, managers, property owners, developers, architects and designers for high standards in design, conservation and creativity.

UCC CUBs (former Cork Savings Bank) won the best Heritage & Conservation Award.

The awards also salute the window cleaners, painters and maintenance staff on their good practice in the presentation and upkeep of the buildings.

The Cork Business Association (CBA) said well-maintained buildings significantly contribute to a positive public perception of the city as a vibrant and dynamic place to live, visit, invest and do business in.

The award ceremony took place today in The Clayton Hotel on Lapp's Quay.

This year, in particular, the CBA wanted to recognise the huge amount of expansion and planning in Cork. 

To acknowledge this, the awards were open to any building in the greater Cork area.

A number of nominations were made for businesses in the new city areas of Ballincollig, Glanmire, Blarney and Douglas.

The 2019 awards acknowledge buildings that have undergone major transformations along with buildings that have been consistently well-maintained through regular maintenance, cleaning and painting.

St Patrick's Bridge received the Judges' Prize for the recent €1.2 million repairs and rehabilitation project.

The repair of the existing lanterns and the installation of new LED lighting has made the bridge more pedestrian-friendly and removed the disconnect between the city centre and the areas around Bridge Street and MacCurtain Street.
