Cork's Cillian Murphy wins big at UK TV awards

DOUGLAS-born actor Cillian Murphy came away with a UK National Television Award for Best Drama Performance, for his role in the hit show Peaky Blinders.

Mr Murphy, came up against some tough acts with Idris Elba in the same category for his role as DCI John Luther in Luther, along with Jodie Comer playing Villanelle in Killing Eve, Michael Stevenson as Iain Dean in Casualty and Suranne Jones as Anne Lister in Gentleman Jack.

Although not there on the night to accept his award, Mr Murphy posted a video message on the Peaky Blinders Twitter page.

In the short clip the Cork actor told fans, he was “very, very touched and very honoured and very humbled to receive this award” and said it confirmed to him that “Peaky Blinders fans are the best in the world, so loyal, so imaginative and so good at voting.” Mr Murphy thanked everyone who voted for him and signed off with a familiar line.

“Thank you, I'm going to dedicate this award to you guys. Lots of love, have an amazing evening by order of the Peaky Blinder."

Cillian’s on-screen brother Harry Kirton and sister Sophie Rundle took to the NTA stage to accept the award on his behalf.

The pair told the crowd: "Thank you so much and I know he would definitely would love to say thank you for the award.

The hit show also took home the award for Best Drama.

With the fifth series at a close, the director of the BBC Drama Anthony Byrne confirmed that the sixth series has officially started pre-production, ensuring another season of hard-hitting drama from the Peaky Blinder makers.

On his Instagram account, Mr Byrne shared an image of the production script, of the first episode entitled 'Black Day'.

He captioned the post: "We are in pre-production on Season 6. More to come. By Order of..."

The National Television Awards aired on ITV and hosted by David Walliams.
