Cork pays tribute to Jonty O'Leary as the dedicated GAA fan is laid to rest

Jonty O'Leary, one of the staunchest GAA supporters Cork has ever seen, was laid to rest today.

Neighbours and friends from Noonans road, many of whom were dressed in Cork jerseys, lined out to pay their respects.

The funeral was held in the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

Timmy 'Jonty' O'Leary passed away peacefully at Cork University Hospital after a long illness on Sunday.

Well known for his colourful red and white outfits and sombrero hats, the Cork legend supported his county in hurling, Gaelic football, camogie and ladies football across all ages and levels.

Jonty was also a fan and keen follower of St Finbarr's.

He also played the drums in the Cork Rebel Band alongside his friends Thomas 'Bomber' Roche, Pa 'The Piper' Hurley, Cyril 'The Bird' Kavanagh, Ray Lucey, Shane Murphy and Eddie 'The Eagle' Burns.

At the funeral today, friends and fellow Cork Rebel Band Members formed a guard of honour as a mark of respect.

Earlier this week, Joe Seward, sports presenter with Life FM, paid tribute to his friend.

"He epitomised the essence of loyalty to the Rebel cause in both victory and defeat.

"I travelled in his company many times and these journeys to a game invariably turned into a long weekend.

"Win, lose or draw, Jonty ensured there were no regrets," Mr Seward said.

"Rest peacefully Jonty hopefully you got the season ticket to the corporate box in heaven," he continued.
