Cork named one of world's friendliest cities

Cork has been named one of the world's friendliest cities, ranking 17th overall.

An online travel website, Big 7 Travel, has compiled a list of the world's friendliest cities, ranked from one to 50.

Cork was ranked highly on first impressions at port of entry, such as an airport or train station. Local's attitude towards tourists, the openness of strangers, and "general friendliness" were also surveyed.

Corkonians were commended for their friendliness by Big 7 Travel, who said: "Cork is a charming and compact riverside city, where the chances of a stranger saying hi to you on the street are likely."

Dublin also featured high up on the list, ranking sixth overall.

Big 7 Travel used data from a sample survey they carried out with their 1.5 million social media audience. They were asked the question: "Where you would find the friendliest city in the world?" and the data was compiled from the response.

The global travel website looked at which cities across the world are most welcoming for tourists and expats alike.

Asian cities ranked highly overall, taking over a lot of the list.

Italy's Rome came dead last at the 50th spot, despite its popularity as a tourist destination.

Canada took the top spot, with Vancouver being noted for its multicultural feel, welcoming nature towards strangers and the efforts locals went to make tourists feel safe.
