Cork murder latest: gardaí focus on a crucial one-hour period four days before the body was found

Gardaí investigating the murder of Paul Jones are focusing on a crucial one-hour period days before the Cork man was found dead.

Gardaí have released a statement appealing to anyone who was in the Bandon Road area between 9.30pm and 10.30pm last Wednesday, to come forward.

Mr Jones, who was seen on Tuesday of last week, was found dead in his home on the Bandon Road on Saturday morning.

It was revealed yesterday that a man in his early 40s and woman in her early 50s have been arrested by gardaí investigating the murder.

The female is being detained at Togher Garda Station while the male is being detained at Mayfield Garda Station.

Investigators say the 55-year-old Mayfield native was killed in his home on Bandon Road and that there were no signs of a break-in.

Detectives are also appealing to any motorists travelling in the area at that time who may have dashcam footage.

Gardaí said they are not revealing the last place where Mr Jones was seen, or the results of the postmortem, for operational reasons.

Mr Jones, from Cahergal, had been living in the rented property on Bandon Road for a number of years. He was found dead by his son Cian on Saturday morning.

His family has said they want justice for him and are devastated by his death.

A source close to the family said: “We are devastated by this. We just want justice for Paul.”

The source said it is another tragedy for the family, as two of Paul’s brothers also died young. – James and Conor.

Gardaí were combing his single-storey rented home on Bandon Road in recent days in the hunt for clues to help them find his killer.

Door-to-door inquiries were carried out in the area, while the house remained sealed off.

Detectives are also poring through CCTV footage.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Anglesea Street Gardaí on 021 4522000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 11 or any Garda station.
