Cork man was arrested in Australia and extradited home to face drug charges

A Cork man was extradited from Australia to face charges arising out of an alleged seizure of over €10,000 worth of drugs in Cork almost ten years ago.

John Noonan, 31, was charged in relation to alleged drugs offences committed ten years ago when he was living at 3 Ravenscourt Avenue, Donnybrook.

Detective Garda Seán Minihane testified at Cork District Court that he charged Noonan with four counts and that the defendant made no reply after caution.

The charges stated that on December 19, 2009, he had cannabis herb and resin and had both drugs for the purpose of sale or supply.

The detective said defendant’s vehicle was searched and that €10,800 worth of drugs was seized. The accused was questioned at the time almost ten years ago but then left the jurisdiction shortly afterwards.

“My belief is that he left to avoid the charges and went to the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

“He was arrested in Australia when his passport was checked (at an airport),” Det. Garda Minihane said.

Garda Declan Healy formally arrested him at Dublin Airport yesterday and brought him before Cork District Court.

Shane Collins-Daly, solicitor, said the accused was arrested in Australia on July 15 and had been remanded in custody there since then. Mr Collins-Daly said Noonan did not challenge the extradition warrant.

The solicitor also said the accused was not charged with any offence when he left Ireland in March 2010 and would not have had anything like a bail restriction on him or anything to curb his travel.

The solicitor said there was an address available for him now in Kinsale, and he could put up a substantial cash bail and surety if approved.

Inspector Noel Madden said the garda concern was that the accused would leave the jurisdiction if granted bail.

Judge Con O’Leary said he required more information on matters including the travel plans which the defendant had at the time he was stopped by authorities in Australia. Noonan was remanded in custody until tomorrow.
