Cork man charged with having €8k worth of stolen power tools

A 24-year-old man was arrested today and brought before Cork District Court charged with stealing power tools and having €8,000 worth of stolen power tools in his possession.

Detective Garda Ian Breen arrested Martin McDonagh of 1 Inchera Close, Mahon, Cork, and charged him three different counts.

When cautioned, the accused man made no reply to any of the charges.

Sergeant Gearóid Davis said the Director of Public Prosecutions had decided that the case should proceed by indictment at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

There was also DPP consent to the accused signing a plea of guilty at Cork District Court and then being sent forward to the circuit court for sentence.

Shane Collins-Daly, defence solicitor, said the signed plea of guilty did not arise and that a book of evidence would be required.

Mr Collins-Daly was appointed to represent McDonagh who is on job seekers allowance.

Judge Olann Kelleher adjourned the case until June 22, a date to which a co-accused was previously adjourned.

Sgt Davis said there was no objection to bail being granted to the accused.

McDonagh is charged that on September 30 2019 he committed a theft at AR Brownlow in Carrigaline, County Cork, of four boxes of Metabo power tools valued €1,200 from a vehicle.

He was also charged with stealing a Bosch industrial hoover and €200 worth of scrap metal from a vehicle at an industrial estate in Carrigaline.

Finally, he is charged with having €8,000 worth of tools at Ballinure Avenue in Cork on the same date.
