Cork gardaí vow no let up in investigating serious offences during ‘challenging time’

A senior Cork garda has said that, while the force is assisting in any way possible during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it also remains focused on investigating serious offences and protecting the community.

Gardaí also arrested a man in his early 40s and seized a suspected handgun in the Knocknaheeny area of Cork city yesterday.
Gardaí also arrested a man in his early 40s and seized a suspected handgun in the Knocknaheeny area of Cork city yesterday.
Superintendent Michael Comyns of the Serious Crime Investigation Unit in Cork city made the comments at Mayfield Garda Station last night, after gardaí arrested a man and made a drug seizure in the city yesterday.

Gardaí arrested a man in his 30s and seized €12,000 of suspected cocaine shortly after 1pm. Gardaí from Watercourse Road were on patrol in the Summerhill North area when they spotted a man acting suspiciously.

The man was searched and was found to be in possession of €12,000 of suspected cocaine and a weighing scales that was found in a gear bag he was carrying. The suspected drugs will now be sent for analysis.

"Today has been a busy day for Gardaí in Cork city,” Supt Comyns said. “A suspected firearm was seized in the early hours of this morning and now suspected drugs worth €12,000.

“Over the last few days our members have shown great dedication to communities throughout the country by assisting in any way possible.

“But during this challenging time we are continuing to investigate serious crime and will be even more dedicated to protecting the communities we serve.”
