Cork city apartments targeted by gardai in sex industry operation

GARDAI targeting the sex industry are preparing files for the Director of Public Prosecutions after targeting apartments in Cork city.

As part of the national operation, carried out as part of Operation Quest, gardaí stopped a number of people leaving apartments in Cork city and “spoke with them”, according to a garda spokesman.

He said they were stopped leaving apartments “where we suspected illegal activities were taking place” relating to the purchase of sex.

Close to 40 people were spoken to across the country, and gardaí would not confirm how many were in Cork.

The operation also took place across Dublin, as well as the Kilkenny/Carlow division, Kerry, Galway and Donegal.

Rural and urban areas were targeted over a period of three days last week, by local detective units with the Garda National Protective Services Bureau.

A spokesman said: “A number of files will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions, with a view to establishing if any criminal prosecution should be initiated, arising from the 'Days of Action'. This operation reinforces An Garda Síochána’s commitment to target the demand for prostitution and to protect vulnerable persons, including victims of human trafficking involved in prostitution. This is the second national operation targeting the demand for prostitution in 2019 and further operations are planned.”
