Cork Harbour bus service to be extended

THE 223 bus route which travels between Cork and Ringaskiddy is to be extended in the coming months to include Carrigaline.

The service currently serves the Cork Harbour towns of Rochestown, Passage West, Monkstown and Ringaskiddy, ending in Haulbowline. The new extended route will be the only public transport connection between Passage West and Carrigaline when it is introduced in the second half of this year.

Independent Councillor Marcia D’Alton has said she is “relieved” to hear that the National Transport Authority (NTA) is planning improvements to the 223 route, changes she said were “hard fought” and “much needed.”

The NTA wrote to Cllr D’Alton this week stating: “The NTA is currently working with Bus Éireann to develop the following new service: Passage West – Monkstown – Shanbally Cross – Carrigaline (centre) – Primary Healthcare Centre and return. We are hopeful that improvements will be implemented during the second half of 2019.”

The Independent Councillor said that the issue was that the Primary Health Centre in Passage West closed in December 2017 and since then there’s been no public transport route for people from Passage to travel to Carrigaline for their care.

As well as this, Ms D’Alton said that the lack of public transport in the area also affects people in Rochestown and Monkstown.

“An improved frequency is the next thing we need, serving the area once an hour is not enough.”
