Calls to name new bridge after Cork's ‘Hometown’ boy

JUST days after City Hall confirmed plans to consult the general public about the name of Cork's newest city centre bridge, one group of music fans have started a petition to get the structure named in honour of Rory Gallagher.

The group say it would be an appropriate way to honour the memory of the world-renowned guitarist.

The Harley Street bridge project is due for completion in April 2019. The €5 million pedestrian and cycle bridge is expected to be used by as many as 11,000 people each day once it is finished.

City Hall this week confirmed that a formal process on the naming of the bridge is underway. A public notice to submit nominations will be issued in the coming weeks, with nominations required to 'honour and celebrate an event or person or group/organisation of major significance' or 'significant local features/geographical locations.'

Nominations will be reviewed by a committee before a shortlist is put back out for public consultation. A final decision will be made by the elected members of Cork City Council early next year.

A group of die-hard music fans have called for the bridge to honour one of the city's most famous musical icons.

They said: "Rory Gallagher grew up in Cork city and he bought his first electric guitar from the iconic Crowley's music shop on MacCurtain Street. His legion of fans is growing even to this day as his music is timeless and spans across generations, inspiring young guitarists to play.

"Cork is a vibrant city renowned for its music and due to the significance of MacCurtain Street in Rory's life and musical career, it would be very appropriate to name the new bridge after Rory."

There have already been calls to name the bridge after Frank O'Connor or Sean O Faolain, while there have several proposals for the bridge to be named after an iconic Cork woman, such as Mary Elmes, as just one city bridge - Nano Nagle Bridge - is named in honour of a female at present.
