CSO figures show 1,400 new homes built last year in Cork

Just 1,402 new dwellings were completed in Cork in 2017 according to new CSO figures.

Broken down this transpired to 104 on the northside of the city and 247 on the southside.

Other areas with big development included Mallow where there were 165 new dwellings, Ballincollig where there were 111 new homes and Carrigaline which had 136.

The breakdown for the rest of the region was 64 dwellings in Midleton, 47 in Cobh, 64 in Kinsale and 65 in Bandon.

Forty in Skibbereen and Bantry, 38 in Clonakilty, 57 in Macroom and 16 in Dunmanway.

There was also 34 in Watergrasshill, 44 in Fermoy, 17 in Mitchelstown and 16 in Charleville and Youghal.

In total there were 567 single dwellings, 757 scheme and 83 apartments built in Cork last year.

The figures were released to rectify previous figures which were off by a considerable amount. Nationally the reporting of new builds were off by 37% from 2011 to 2017.

Acting manager for Threshold said this report underlines the urgent need for affordable rental models in Ireland.

“In a recent survey carried out by Threshold, only 29% of those surveyed were renting by choice. People want security of tenure which is currently not in the private rented sector.

“Tenants are paying high rents which is making it extremely difficult for people to save deposits to purchase properties.

“In our recent survey, 45% of tenants spend more than a third of their take-home pay on rent, while 14 % of tenants spend more than half of their take-home pay on rent.” “There were 1,402 new homes constructed in Cork in 2017. There are people in the private rented market who don’t want to be there and want to purchase homes and this needs to be priority for Government.

“There will always be a need for the private rented market but really this should be for those who for various reasons will never be in a position to own their own home.

“The private rented market needs to be available for those that really need it and unfortunately this is not the case at the moment with high numbers having to access emergency accommodation.”
