Bus passengers from Cork towns to benefit from lower fares

Bus Eireann commuters from towns such as Bandon, Fermoy and Mallow are set to benefit from new lower LeapCard fares and more flexible tickets.

The new Leap Green Zone in Cork will include the boundary areas of Bandon, Fermoy, Kinsale, Macroom and Mallow, meaning customers there may now avail of lower ‘zonal’ fares.

The Leap Card also provides for a 30% discount on single journey cash fares and the new reduced rate Leap Monthly along with Annual Taxsaver products could now offer up to €500 in savings for some customers in a year.

There will be additional value in travel to/from the Leap Green Zone, as customers will be able to avail of discounted travel on all Red Zone city services too.

While there are small increases in city cash fares, 10 cents for adult and child, significant savings remain available to customers who use the Leapcard with additional value with Green Zone products valid on all Red Zone city services also.

Reduced rate monthly and annual point to point Taxsaver tickets will apply between Midleton and Cork also and higher city single fares will apply for cross-city journeys of greater than 7.5kms.

The changes, announced by the National Transport Authority, will be implemented from Saturday, 1, December.

Bus Éireann Operations Manager South, Martin Walsh, said both the NTA and Bus Éireann continued to work together to make public transport more attractive as a travel mode: “Last year there was an extension of the Red City zone to many of the suburbs in Cork, resulting in significantly reduced cash and Leap Card fares.

“This year the focus is on Cork County and bringing the boundary areas into a new Green Zone, again resulting in major savings for some customers, particularly those using monthly and annual Taxsaver products. While challenges remain in terms of improvements to some services in the city – due to congestion and increased capacity demand – we are working with the NTA to address these in 2019.”
