Burglaries with firearms on the rise in Cork

THERE have been eleven aggravated burglaries in Cork so far this year.

Aggravated burglary involves use of a firearm, an imitation firearm, or an explosive.

The figures, which are up 175% on last year, were revealed in the latest Garda statistics at the quarterly Joint Policing Committee (JPC) meeting.

Last year, there were four such incidents, between January and November 2016.

Chief Superintendent Barry McPolin said the increase of seven aggravated burglaries, when spread out over eleven months, was not a lot.

“However, I would like to say, while each of these incidents is very serious, we have almost a 90% detection rate in relation to this type of crime.”

While Chief Supt McPolin said that they had a high detection rate, he acknowledged that prevention is better than an arrest and conviction and that no-one should have to endure this type of experience.

“We have a very high level of detection in this particular category. However, one such incident is too many.”

Chief Supt McPolin appealed to the public to remain vigilant with relation to burglaries and aggravated burglaries, and to report suspicious activity to the gardaí.
