Bookies make Micheál Martin favourite to be Taoiseach

BOYLESPORTS has shortened the odds on Micheál Martin becoming Taoiseach, making the Fianna Fáil leader and Cork South Central TD a favourite to lead the country after the next general election.

The bookmaker said uncertainty about what state the country will be left in after Brexit is taking its toll on Leo Varadkar, with his odds now at even money, a drift from 5/6.

“We had to cut the price on Micheál Martin on Thursday morning into 8/11 from 5/6 due a series of bets placed on the Fianna Fáil leader,” Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports said.

“Leo Varadkar is coming under pressure by the day and has a big task on his hands with Brexit D-day approaching.”

Rival bookmakers Paddy Power also make Mr Martin the favourite to be Taoiseach after a general election.

Mr Varadkar’s popularity may also have been impacted by the ongoing CervicalCheck screening.

He has planned to apologise for failures in the service when the Dáil returns from its summer break.
