50 jobs lost as Passage West Eurospar shuts shop

Eurospar in Passage West closed its doors for the final time on Wednesday affecting the jobs of 50 workers.

Staff were informed in mid-February of the closure and given 30-days notice after the owners of the building on the Rochestown Road put it up for sale.

The property was transferred to Nama who sold the building to US asset management firm Oaktree.

Now its sale is being handled by estate agents Savills.

Local Sinn Féin Cllr Michael Murphy said: [It's a] very sad day in Passage West as Eurospar closes for last time. I would like to thank all the staff for their time for the people of Passage West and surrounds and wish them well in their job search.”

Independent Cllr Maria D'Alton said the shop was “so much more than just somewhere you went to buy” and provided a service that “was as much about people as profit”. She added that shop had been at the heart of the community since opening in 2008.

Local sports clubs who had been sponsored and supported by the business took to social media to express their gratitude.

A post on the Passage AFC Facebook page read: [We] would like to express our thanks to everybody at Eurospar for their support over the years. The management and staff have always been more than helpful and we wish each and everyone of them the very best for the future.

Passage West GAA said: “The shop has always been a great supporter. Thank you for all the sponsorship and letting us use your premises for lotto ticket sales once a month...You all will be missed”.
