€222,500 racehorse found almost starved to death on a Cork farm

WAR Celeste, a thoroughbred racehorse believed to be worth €222,500 was found abandoned and almost starved to death in a barn in East Cork.

A member of the public raised concerns to the My Lovely Horse Rescue, who then sent a volunteer to the farm where War Celeste and 10 other horses were found in February of last year.

War Celeste is seven-years-old. It was one of four horses found in an extremely poor condition, with their rib cages showing and standing on a pile of excrement several feet high, while the remaining seven were found across the farmland.

There were cats and dogs found on the farm that were rescued and also suffering from serious health issues, both due to being abandoned and what appeared to be pre-existing health issues.

Three of the horses and two dogs had to be euthanised due to their condition.

My Lovely Horse Rescue tried to save the horses but the condition the three horses were in, it was “only a matter of days” before they would have died due to their poor health according to My Lovely Horse Rescue Cork volunteer, Maddie Doyle.

Some of the horses’ injuries sustained from their neglect included sore feet, starvation and damage to their teeth, so bad that they weren’t able to eat properly.

Ms Doyle told The Echo that the scenes at the farm have changed the people that were there the day the animals were discovered.

“It was a very distressing scene, one of the worst we’ve ever come across.

“Our volunteers still talk about it about how there was a silence there with animals left just waiting to die.

“The people involved came away as changed people. It’s not an exaggeration, it was horrific,” she said.

War Celeste is still with My Lovely Horse Rescue, as well as one horse who is 19-years-old.

“My Lovely Horse Rescue are actively looking for someone to adopt War Celeste but will only let her go to someone with experience of having a thoroughbred mare.

An investigation is ongoing with gardaí following a definite line of enquiry.
