Wedding of the Week: Teenage sweethearts who met at Valentine's disco

SOME 16 years ago, at a Valentine’s Disco, Kate Humston and David Jennings first met.
Kate was in first year and David in third year of secondary school, when, in February 2004, their paths first crossed and their unexpected journey began.
Kate recalled: “Like most teenage relationships we were ‘on/off’ for years but decided to give it a real go when we were expecting our first daughter and we haven’t looked back since.”
The couple still live in their home town, Union Hall, West Cork, with their three children, Amy aged ten, Ryan, aged seven, and Alice, aged two.
While waiting for the arrival of the man in red, David proposed to Kate on Christmas Eve in 2014, after the kids went to bed.
Five years later, surrounded by friends and family, on New Year’s Eve, 2019, they finally made it official at St Bridget’s Church, Union Hall — their local church where they went as children.
“Ringing in the New Year with all our friends and family was so special — one we’ll never forget,” the couple said.
The wedding reception was held at the Celtic Ross Hotel, Rosscarbery.
Kate said: “Everything was outstanding, everyone was so lovely to deal with and we couldn’t praise them highly enough.”
The bride’s wedding dress was by Mori Lee and was purchased from Vows in Blarney, County Cork.
The bridal party included Maid of Honour Lisa O’Mahony (Kate’s cousin), and bridesmaids Emma Miles, Kate’s best friend, Kate Jennings, her new sister-in-law, and her daughter Amy Jennings, with her other daughter Alice as flower girl.
Best man was David’s brother Aaron Jennings, groomsmen were also his brothers, Ian and George, and his son Ryan.
Recalling the memorable day, the happy couple said: “Our families were amazing and we wouldn’t have been able to do it without all of their help with everything.”
The band ‘Route 66’ was fantastic and had the floor full all night
“There were a lot of really memorable moments,” Kate recalled of the special day.
“But the first for me would definitely be walking up the aisle.
“I was so nervous about it for weeks beforehand but in the end I absolutely loved it.”
