My Weekend: I love getting up early before the city gets busy!

Dr Doireann O’Leary talks to us about her favourite go-to spots to recharge her batteries, why she loves the gym and catching up with family at the weekends

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a 31-year-old Cork-based doctor. I was born, raised and educated in Cork. I live and work in the city. My husband is also a doctor and a Cork native. We both went to UCC and went through most of our training in CUH.

What is your ideal way to spend a Friday night?

After finishing up at work I like to go to the gym, then home to get ready for an early dinner out with my husband. Where we go depends on our mood. I still like to be in bed by midnight at weekends so I can be productive and up early on Saturday and Sunday.

Lie ins or up with the lark.. which is it for you?

Up with the lark! Love getting up early before the city gets busy!

Does work creep into your weekend?

It does. As as doctor, we have out of hours commitments. It’s not too onerous though. I don’t mind it. I love my job.

If money was no object where would you head to on a weekend city break? And who would you bring with you?

I’d love to visit Tahiti or Bora Bora. It’s not the money that would be the major sting though; it’s the jet lag that’s held us back from going! The thought of it makes me tired! We’ll get there some day though. And of course I’d bring my husband.

Closer to home, is there some place you like to head to recharge the batteries?

We lived and worked in Tralee a few years ago. Banna and Ballybunion beaches are magnificent. Great beach walks to unwind.

Do you like to catch up with family/friends at the weekend?

Yes absolutely. My husband and I often work at weekends so if there’s a weekend when we’re both not working we’ll take the opportunity to spend it together. If he’s working I’ll catch up with friends or my mom.

Do you get to indulge in any hobbies? Even as a spectator?

I love the gym. I’m not the kind of person that has to be dragged to the gym; I do a few sessions of cardio a week. I’ve always loved being active. My other hobby is my blog (https://drdoireann.wordpress.com/) which I also like spending time on.

Entertain or be entertained? If it’s the latter do you have a signature dish?

Be entertained! I’m a “can’t cook, won’t cook” kind of person. I have IBS. I take a daily probiotics called Alflorex and my own diet is very bland. I’m not a foodie at all. And I don’t drink so I don’t know anything about wine/beer. So for that reason I don’t entertain. I wouldn’t have a notion where to start! Peter would do it with far more finesse than I would. He’s the chef in our house.

We have so many places to eat out in Cork — where are your go to spots for coffee/ lunch/ special meal?

We are spoiled for choice. For tea/coffee, The Imperial Hotel is my favourite. We also like Blackrock Castle or The Farmgate for lunch. The Bulman is a great dinner spot.

Sunday night comes around too fast...how do you normally spend it?

Usually a walk in the evening followed by dinner at home with Peter. I make a to-do list for the week ahead so I have an idea of what my week will look like. I take Sunday evenings pretty easy in anticipation of launching into a busy week ahead.

What time does your alarm clock go off on Monday morning?

Peter’s alarm clock goes off before 6 so I’m up around then but thankfully I don’t have to get moving until about 7.
