Describe your job in five words: Busy, interesting, dynamic, fun and engaging.
Describe yourself in five words: Organised, motivated, fun-loving, enthusiastic and responsible.
Personality needed for this kind of work? Regus is constantly interacting with customers, whether they are in-house office clients, virtual office clients, meeting room/day office clients, Business World clients or daily visitors to the centre, so an outgoing personality is definitely needed.
How long are you doing this job? Nine years.
How did you get this job? After graduating from college and not being sure what career path exactly I wanted to pursue, I started working in a busy cash and carry office, taking orders from busy shops, hotels and restaurants.
The fast-paced office environment and daily interaction with clients made me realise that this was an area I really enjoyed so when I saw an advertisement for a new business coming to Cork, it immediately peaked my interests. I applied for the job and the rest, as they say, is history!
Do you need particular qualifications or experience? Experience in customer service is a must and proficiency in Microsoft Office. Regus offers great support and training for employees so there is a great support network to learn and develop in the job.
Describe a day at work: To describe a day at work, I think it would be best to explain what Regus does. We provide fully serviced office space to clients, virtual office services whereby we handle post and/or telephone calls for clients that may be based from the comfort of their homes, meeting rooms, and a video-conference suite.
We also have a world-wide membership programme called Business World which allows members to access our centres worldwide.
You can also book a ready-to-go office or meeting room with Regus, even if you are not a member, just by logging on our website or calling us directly.
We provide a full reception team and act as an extension of each company so clients can come to us for whatever they need, whether they need assistance with IT or administration, or if they require invoices or a statement of account.
Regus’s two Cork centres, at City Gate, Mahon, and Phoenix House, Monahan Road, are open from 8.30am-6pm, Monday-Friday, and there are three of us that work different shifts. My working day is 9am to 5pm and I like to plan it in advance so I can be fully prepared coming into work in the mornings and have my day planned and organised.
The first thing I do in the morning when I come in is check my emails and our daily work report to see if any bookings/appointments have been made the previous evening and I action these as needed. Once all the team is in work we discuss the day’s agenda and make sure we are ready for the day’s tasks.
The business that I am in means no two days are the same, so depending on the day and on our bookings, one morning I could be setting up a video conference meeting to Australia for a client and the next I could be preparing for a 10 person office move-in into the centre so I could be configuring telephones and IT connections in our comms room.
Daily tasks involve accounts payable, accounts receivable, compliance, administration, and ensuring the centre is looking well.
The job that I do is extremely versatile which is why I love it.
How many hours do you work a week? 37.5.
What do you wear to work? I wear a skirt or trousers with a nice top and blazer or a dress with a blazer.
Is your industry male or female dominated? There are over 3000 Regus centres worldwide, providing a healthy mix of male and female staff.
Is your job stressful? How? Rate it on a scale of 1-10: Like any job, some days are busier and more challenging than others but with that comes a sense of achievement! Because I work in a job that is so versatile some days can be really busy and hectic but as there are a few of us working here we can balance the workload. I would say that on a day where there is a lot going on it can be a 7.
Do you work with others or on your own? I am really lucky to have a fantastic team working with me. Having colleagues you can depend on is extremely important.
When do you plan to retire or give up working? When we have a holiday home overlooking the beach in Kerry!
Best bits: Chatting with customers on a daily basis and working alongside really fantastic colleagues. We also get our birthday day off which is a lovely little perk!
Worst bits: My husband is a primary school teacher so setting the alarm during the summer months knowing he can have a lie-in can be tough!
Advice to those who want your job? You need to be open to change and flexible in your approach as new products and opportunities come on board.
