Stapleton House on Oliver Plunkett Street is to become a new gym opening in January.

A new gym is to open in January in Stapleton House on Oliver Plunkett Street.

The building was developed at the height of the Celtic Tiger for office use but has remained empty over the past decade.

Now Dublin-based gym operator FLYEfit has secured a long term lease for five floors above the ground floor of the property at the eastern end of the street next to Ikon hair and Milanos restaurant.

They are planning to invest €2m in the fit out of the premises and plan to open it in January.

FLYEfit currently operates 11 gyms in Dublin and has announced a €6 million expansion opening of two new Dublin gyms along with their first foray into the Cork market.

Along with the five floors of Stapleton House, the company has also acquired the adjoining building next door for a facility covering 25,000 square feet.

The new gyms at Oliver Plunkett Street and at Sallynoggin and Liffey Valley in Dublin are currently being fitted out ahead of their scheduled opening in early January 2019.

“We are especially delighted to open in Cork which has been on our horizon for some time," a FLYEfit spokesperson said.

"We took our time to find the right building in the heart of Cork City and to develop a facility that we know locals will enjoy. The demand for membership has exceeded our expectations and we are looking forward to being part of the local community."

The new gym will include Spin Studios, Cardio and Strength Equipment, an Astro Area, a Free Weights and Functional Zone, boxing zones and Olympic lifting platforms.

The new gym will also include a Conditioning Chamber when it opens. This new facility will be equipped with rowers, ski ergs, assault bikes and air runners.
